To protect Hawaii’s human health, public welfare, and the environment, the Hazard Evaluation and Emergency Response (HEER) office provides state leadership, support and partnership in preventing, planning for, responding to, and enforcing environmental laws relating to releases or threats of releases of hazardous substances, pollutants or contaminants.
Some of HEER’s responsibilities include cleaning up illegal methamphetamine manufacturing sites, identifying and cleaning up pesticide and heavy metal poisoning, running a voluntary response program, and identifying potential environmental hazards at sites with contaminated soil and groundwater as well as assisting in the cleanup and redevelopment of these properties.
