Hawai’i, like all other metropolitan areas, requires waste management to keep the land clean, sanitary, and beautiful.  The office of Solid Waste Management regulates the transportation, treatment, storage and disposal of hazardous waste and solid waste.  They are also administers of a pollution prevention and waste minimization program that assists businesses and the public of Hawaii in reduction and prevention of waste generation at the source.  Lastly, the office of solid waste management also regulates underground storage tanks which store petroleum or hazardous substances.  
 
The office of solid waste offers permits for the construction and operation of convenience centers, green waste composting facilities, land clearing, grubbing, certain agricultural and inert waste landfills, incineration, medical waste treatment, and recycling and drop-off and processing facilities using single source separated material for reuse.
